NCC Garden

Fellow Classmates,

Today, I volunteered at our NCC garden. I was able to water plants, dig up rocks to remove from the soil, root up the soil to make planting crops run smoother, and also plant some carrots. Little did I know, carrots are super small seeds that just get sprinkled across the soil. It was not what I had pictured it being like. Then, you just run your hands across it and make sure soil covers the seeds, but they don't get planted into the dirt. It was so nice to be able to participate while out in this gorgeous weather. I also was instructed to terminate any white sluggish bugs I saw because they eat the plants and kill them. Planting seems to be an easy thing, but I realized today that there is a lot more that goes into it and a lot of work! But it is definitely rewarding in the end! Below is a quick video of me at the NCC garden digging up some rocks that need to be removed from the soil for better planting. Enjoy!

  1. Hi, Colleen
Thanks for sharing your post and your video. I enjoyed your reaction to carrot seeds; I remember thinking the same thing, the first time I planted them. I hate when you have to thin the babies! I am a wussy about killing the garden critters, too, so I tend to just work a round them. By the way you are quite an expert at removing rocks, and I happen to have a great big garden plot...feel free to apply your mad skills over there, too, anytime you feel like it ;)

  2. Colleen,

I was unaware of the fact that carrot seeds were tiny and didn't actually get planted. I wonder if this helps them grow better in different areas. There are so many things that I am realizing that I don't know. Thank you for sharing.

  3. Peggy, if I only had the time to dig the rocks out of your garden I would love to haha. The slugs were definitely not something I was hoping to come across, I am also a big baby when it comes to bugs! Thank you for your input!

Maxine, I didn't that was how carrots grew either! I really don't know much about planting but that is why it was so neat about going to the garden and being able to see!
